A 13-year-old boy sustained fatal injuries on Saturday afternoon as the result of a collision with a tree at Nashoba Valley Ski Area.
The incident occurred in an area between the Lobo and Tomahawk trails, two of the ski area’s more difficult trails.
He was wearing a helmet during the incident and the ski patrol was on the scene within minutes.
The boy was evacuated at approximately 2:20 p.m. and transported to Lowell General Hospital, where he was later declared deceased.
According to a statement from Nashoba Valley Ski Area General Manager Al Fletcher, this was the first ski-related fatality of which he was aware in the ski area’s history.
“All of us are deeply shaken by this incident, ” said Fletcher. “Our hearts are with his family. We can only imagine what they’re going through.”
The incident is still under investigation.
