Forest management work has begun along two town forest parcels located near the intersection of Forge Village and Cold Spring Roads near Westford Academy and the Old Arch Bridge
The thinning efforts aim to increase greater tree diversity, with the area currently dominated by mature white pines at a rate of approximate 400 trees per acre. Thinning is also expected to improve soil quality, undergrowth vegetation and the local animal population.
Combined, the two parcels equal approximately 13 acres and the Westford Forest Committee hopes to reduce forest’s tree density to approximately 300 trees per acre over the summer.
Work is being conducted by AXE Brothers of Acton and is expected to take several weeks.
